Introduction :
”The art of boiling water” is a fictional cookbook. You are to design the layout of this book and show examples of how the pages should look. In the book, you will use one serif font and one sans serif font.
The page format is 200 millimetres wide by 260 milimetres high with a 3 milimetre bleed.  Pagination.

Research and work :
My main tip for this project i procured from an actual chef that works at the Brittania hotel in Trondheim.
I was told the most important thing for a cookbook to be useful, and often seprates a good book from a bad book, is the fact that the information should be gathered on one spread. A cook does not want to change pages for the info he needs while he is cooking. If a cook has to change pages while he is cooking a recipe, he will likely  trash the book rather than put it to use.

The cookbook i took the most inspiration from was ”The Flying Culinary Circus” as this book is more or less a work of art wich i find truly enjoyable. If i were to aspire too create a whole cookbook this would be the staple i would aim for. The main thing i drew from the book into this project was the use of imaging, having an entire page focus on the imagery and composition of the food.

Design options/decisions :
I ended up changing the layout from the way i sketched out the book, my main reason for this was that i wanted to keep the quality of the imagery as sharp and ”good looking” as possible. Despite drafting out 2 sets of

My easiest design decision in the process of creating this ”book” was the choice of type, Calluna and Calluna sans, as i have seen this type on a menu at a local sushi restaurant. I really liked reading the menu and recalled the type the instant i saw it. I feel it brings the message/recipe forward in an easy to read easy to use style. It also ads to the visuals in the imagery by not being over the top as many menus type might be.

I also added a slim border that fades to all the pages and sections to bring the book together with something visual yet minimal. Even though the cover page is dark due to the imagery, this border is stil present by the title and then throughout the rest of the book.

I also made the Ingredients list pop out alittle more by making the text 14 pt while the description/how to portion is 12 pt. I did this as the Ingredients portion is usually the part you most often do a double take on while cooking or creating a shopping list.

Self-evaluation :
I focused most of my energy into making the book simplistic and practical to use in the kitchen, in retrospect i would have liked to bring alittle more ”fun and flare” to the book. however in the end i wanted to stay true to the information and imagery provided. I spent a good amount of time playing around with the textboxes, making printouts to see  how it reads etc. I might have done something more creative with this, but i could not quite  figure it out as the end result became a bit bland in my opinion.

Learning Activity – Principles of Layout, Form and Space, Symmetry/Asymetry, Pace & Contrast

Form and Space :

  • Rearrange shapes cut out of paper, and try to find the point at which the figure disappears into the ground.
    • Cut out a series of shapes from black paper – squares, rectangles, circles and random shapes – in a variety of sizes, from small to large.
    • Working with a square piece of white paper, place shapes of different sizes into the white space; place them on the white one at a time and move them around.
    • Try to find the point where the distinction between figure and ground becomes unclear. Does it depend on which shape dominates the space: black or white? Is it about the position of the shape within the space? Think about how important figure-ground relationships are within composition and design.
  • Write down your findings, and remember to take pictures of your progress.

Symmetry/asymmetry :

In this assignment, you will be given the opportunity to also test your idea sketching skills. It is important to start working with basic ideas on paper and develop your concept from there on out.

  1. On an A4 landscape page, draw four equal squares. Create 4 more pages in this way. So, you’ll have 5 pages with four squares on each.
  2. Draw one or two squares or rectangles in each empty square to achieve the following visual effects (refer to your textbook, p.41 as guidance). You can work with the interaction of rectangles and squares to make the balance or imbalance more evident.
    • Entering left
    • Movement to the right
    • Movement to the left
    • Movement downwards
    • Movement upwards
    • Balance
    • Tension
    • Symmetry/asymmetry

    Produce at least two different versions of each effect, recording your results each time. Explain in one or two sentences what you wanted to achieve (as shown in your manual)

  3. Write down your findings

Basic Principles of Layout :

Take a magazine, newspaper or book that includes images and text. Lay tracing paper over the top of three spreads (both left-hand and right-hand pages). Using a pencil and ruler, carefully trace the grid underlying the page layouts. Remember to remove specific text elements or images, and to only draw the grid lines. Note column widths and margin sizes at the top, bottom, and to the left and right of the main body of text. Is your document based on a two-column, three-column, or another type of grid? Which elements stay the same on each page, and which change?

Pace and Contrast :

Compare the design (in terms of pace and contrast) of an online magazine, blog or website to that of a printed magazine, book or journal.

  1. What differences can you see between the kinds of design strategies used in the two formats?
  2. Write down your findings

Learning Activities

Using InDesign, design a 4-page brochure for a fictitious travel agent.

  • The size of the brochure should be A5 (when it is folded).
  • Design the brochure in full colour.
  • Use fake body copy, but create sensible headings.
  • Use titles, headings and images of your choice.

Learning Activity – Exposure Basics.

Learning Activities

1 – Name all the functions on the front of your camera.


A -Infrared receiver, this is located on the front of the handle (The black dot in the centre)
B – Red eye reduction / Focus assist lamp, this is the led lamp under the mode dial (Right next to the shutter release button).
C – Microphone. (The three holes on to top right of the front)
D – Lens release button. (The black half moon button next to the lens on the right side)
E – Lens mounting mark. (This is a white mark just above the lens release Button)

2 – Name all the functions on the back of your camera.


A – Information Edit (Bottom left marked with an i).
B – Thumbnail / Playback zoom out (Second button from the bottom left marked with an – ).
C – Playback zoom in ( third button from the bottom left marked with a +).
D – Menu Button (Fourth button marked Menu).
E – Image playback button (The “Play” button on the top left).
F – Top left is another infrared receiver (Black dot).
G – Mode dial (top left turn dial on the top of the camera).
H – AutoExposure / AutoFocus lock button (Marked AE-L AF-L).

3 – Explain how you would set the correct ISO.
The ISO is usually 100. You can change this around when you have  photos that need to be taken in the dark. On the D3300 you can set the ISO from 100 to HI1. the modes in-between are 200 – 400 – 800 – 1600 – 3200 – 6400 – 12800.
Usually i would never go over 400, maybe 800 if i am in a pinch. Only when it is really dark and don’t have the opportunity to use a longer shutter speed.

4 – Explain how you would change the aperture
With aperture you can change several aspects of a photo. mainly the exposure, meaning blur and focus. I also use this to let in more light if i am in a darker area (a low F stop), if am am doing landscape photography or taking photos of a larger area i would use a high F stop number to make sure most of the image is sharp and in focus. If i am focusing on a portrait or something specific i would use a low F stop to blur out some of the background, bringing the item or person i am “shooting” into focus instead of the backdrop.
The F stops on the Nikon D3300 can be set to and from : F 3.5 – F 4 – F 4.5 – F 5 – F 5.6 – F 6.3 – F 7.1 – F8 – F 9 – F 10 – F 11 – F 13 – F 14 – F 16 – F18 – F 20 – F 22.

5 – Explain how you would change the shutter speed.
Shutter speed is  very situational, depending on what you are taking pictures of. if you have good lighting and are taking photos of something that moves around or is fast a faster shutter speed is good. the problem with a fast shutter speed is that if you do not have good lighting the image will get very dark,  this can be compensated for by tweaking the ISO settings  and having the aperture let in more light. if you have a low shutter speed (using a long closing time) the photo lets in more light and is good for taking  images of landscapes and darker areas, un less something is moving around. it is also a good way to take photos with blur. like the night photos you see where the cars are just a streak of headlights. If you are using a longer shutter speed you will need a tripod to ensure the camera is stable. this ensures you don’t get blurry photos, it is hard to use a long shutter speed while holding the camera, unless you lean it or put it against something. the images you get from this mode can however be very interesting. I like using very long shutter speeds while taking time lapse photos or imagery of the stars and northern lights.

Finally we were to take at least 5 photos a day for a week,aand then post a selection of 6 images out of all these photos with an expllanation of the settings we used. All images are shot with a manual camera setting and little to none post processing.

Mandatory Assignment 03 – Illustration.

Mandatory Assignments

For the illustration assignment we were asked to pick a song and create an illustration/poster based on this song.
The song i cjoose was Herr Drosselmeyer’s Doll by Abney park.

There is no opportunity to use text in the poster. The illustration must be in the format 210 x 300 mm, with a resolution of 300ppi and a 3 mm bleed.

Idea Development :
I wanted to illustrate the doll as a ballerina on a stage, as the songs lyrics portray her. The target group of the band/song is steampunk and or victorian inspired individuals. I wanted to illustrate this in the clothing of the ballerina and Herr Drosselmeyer, emphasizing the victorian style in favor over a steampunk look.I started to draw the doll/ballerina first and then developed the rest of the illustration around her as she will be the focal point and main focus of the illustration.

Illustration Style :
I decided to go for a painterly and drawn style.Albeit a tad cartoony, it gave the illustration some extra flare concerning the colours choosen.I gave the doll an unnatural hair colour and “blank/colorless” eyes to emphasize the fact that she is “unreal” so to speak, as the song portrays her.

Sketching :
I started with some very raw sketches to form a vague idea of what i wanted the illustration to contain. Some sketches of ballet poses and a man in the shadows as i wanted Herr Drosselmeyer to be a bit of a mystery. After getting the essence of the idea down, i started sketching digitally, as i would have a better grasp of what colours i would be using and change things around more easily as i experimented with different colour schemes. I added a pocket watch to illustrate time passed in the illustration and the end of the show. This is when Herr Drosselmeyer need to rewind the doll for the next show.

Illustration/Poster :
The stage, curtains and audiende i sketched out in Adobe Illustrator. Other than that i spent most of the time painting in Photoshop on 1-2 Layers, keeping things simple. I did not really want the audience to show too well, as i felt it could draw the focus away from the main focal point in the illustration. On the printout they are mere shasows as i intended.

Reflections :
In the end i got the result i intended, however, In the future i am going to play around more with textures instead of drawing everything by hand, i feel that it would greatly improve and add to my illustrations and in turn giving them a dash of realism.
I was considering recreating a logo in Illustrator and adding to the image but i did not find a good spot for it and feared this would ruin the focal points in the rest of the illustration. However i feel i stayed true to the rule of thirds.
