Learning Activity – Gestalt Theory.

Learning Activities
  • Define the Gestalt Theory in your own words.
  • Page through a magazine or newspaper or browse the Internet and find a different logo for each of the Gestalt principles. Explain in your own words, which logos are showing which principles, motivate your answer.
  • Find examples of four themes of thinking, and explain your choices.



The Gestalt Theory defines when objects form or illustrate something in a group or pattern, the human brain often percieve as something recognisable or pleasing to the eye.

The term “Gestalt” Is terminology used in psychology  and it`s meaning is “unified whole”. The theory is based around visual perception and was developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. They describe how we as humans always tend to organize visual elements into groups and make connections, even if they are not visually present.

In this image a simple silhuete of steve jobs in the apple logo is very powerful as it displays everything apple is about in the simplest of manners.


Proximity :

I thought this image was really cool as the shapes gather to create the corner of a brick wall, creating depth.

Similarity :

Another image i really like as the shapes are predominantly the same, however arranged like this it is clearly the statue of liberty.

Continuation :

The amazon logo is a classic and it clearly illustrates the continuation in the logo with the arrow passing by in the shape of a smile.




Closure :

The FedEx logo is an example of closure with the “hidden” arrow.I never really thought about it before it was mentioned to me. However subliminally i have always known it was there.


Figure and Ground :

The sony walkman logo creates a depth with the shapes surrounding it.giving it an illusionry effect that it kind of rises from the wall or ground.



Themes of thinking.

Negative/white Space : My personal favoriute use of the Gestalt theory is good use of negative space, meaning something is not completely drawn out in the logo or illustration but the brain completes the pattern and the shape of the logo or drawing as it knows the patterns are connected in some way.

The most used example of this is for instance the World Wildlife Fund panda logo.

Another description of it is used alot in sketching and drawing portraits and is usually described as “indicating”. Example : i almost never fully draw the lips on a portrait or a drawing of a face, i indicate the lips, the reason for this is if you outline the entire set of the human lips it looks strange and fake in a way. There are however some instances where drawing the entire outline would work well for stylistic reasons (ie a clown, a model or someone wearing highly contrasting makeup).

Ockham`s Razor : Elements and factors that are not needed or seem superfluous should be removed. in this you reduce the risk of inconsistencies and confusion. This is very true in design as well as some designs can end up looking cluttered and in the end, not being noticed and just be seen as noise if it is overdone.

Graphic Impact : Graphics should create a visual impact and grab attention to reinforce comunication, without being too distracting or complicated. (Ie see Ockham`s Razor).
This is an effective way to comunicate  a message fast and simple if it is done correctly.

Scale : Scale is important for design work as scalability of the work done is paramount. A logo have to work on posters and boxes as well as on stamps and stickers. This is easy to forget when you sit on the computer and work on something while you zoom in and out. Readability is paramount in a design at any size.Thinking of this in the design process saves alot of hasle down the line if the logo is to be used for a new product.

Create a visualization of the entire Graphic Design course structure and add your own perspectives to create a infographic that reflects on your progression over the two previous semesters.

Your infographic will then help you in writing a short, and clear, artists’ statement.


For this activity your goal is to create a spacious, full-color, visualization of the Graphic Design course structure. The level of detail, and structure, is up to each student.
The point of creating this infographic is for you as a budding designer to reflect on you current skill level and where you want to be heading.
It is possible for you to use any type of tools to create this visualization – even 3D software.

The information graphic is the final draft of the image that you will present to the forum.

Artists’ Statement

Research other written artists’ statements where they are commonly used to complement and explain pieces of art. However you will be writing this statement about your creative identity and/or reflections about your future as a designer.

Bear in mind that your statement is to be no more then 400 letter. This means that it needs to be a highly reflected and concisely written text.

Learning Activity – Composition.

Learning Activities

Take a series of photographs, each photograph must focus on one of the following:

  • Pattern
  • Symmetry
  • Texture
  • Depth of field
  • Lines
  • Framing
  • Perspective
  • Space
  • Balance
  • Colour

Submit your ten best photographs.




Pattern : I chose this image for pattern as the pattern in the stones of the tunnel gives the image depth.300815_1899



Lines : The lines in the fireld of this shot are useful to get the eyes moving around the image. Along with the fog.DSC_3853



Texture : I chose this image for texture as stone generally have alot of interesting textures, along with the river/water as a contrast to the stone.DSC_3154



Framing : I framed this shot with the rule of thirds in mind (as i generally do with all photo shoots). This weather station on the coast was an interesting to me as it was standing alone by the coast on an overcast and windy day.With some depth of field along with the lighting the image turned out quite interesting.   DSC_2507



Balance : I found this stone pillar by the river, someone had set it up to mark the rise and fall of the water running by.The stone balancing on top, along with some space with the river made for a well balanced portrait of the vertical pillar.DSC_3206



Colour : The colour of the flishing rod’s line stood out and contrasted well with the dark water and wood of the boat.DSC_3219



Perspective : I chose this image for perspective, because of the lines in the boat and its structure, you can almost  se perspective lines tied to it from the horizon.031015_1546.jpg



Depth of field : The bushes in the background of this image are quite blurred out (Boke), this ensures the focus of the image are the two birds perched on the fence. The trick here was to ensure the sparrows were both sharp and in focus in the photo.031015_1521.jpg



Space : Taking this photo i decided to take a few images in a portrait orientation to  gather the vastnes of the location rather than taking all landscape oriented images. A big sky and the mountains in tyhe background leaves alot of space but still amphasize the treeline in front with a white tailed eagle perched on a branch. I did get another with the bottom of the treeline in the image.



Symmetry : I chose this image for symmetry as both the White tailed eagle and the seagull were gliding and moving their wings with an unusual, almost strange synchronicity. despite the birds being quite different in size and species the symmetry of this was fascinating to me.DSC_3679
